HIV Testing Information

SoBAP now offers Oraquick Advance an HIV test with one-hour results, in addition to the Orasure test with two-week results we have been offering. Both are available free of charge.

The one-hour test allows our clients to receive HIV results the same day they test. However, some results may require further testing.

In order to perform the Rapid Test we will need to collect a sample of oral fluids. This test is conducted on a confidential basis, that means that you will need to give us your name and provide identification to be tested.

If you are uncomfortable with this you may still test anonymously via the standard oral fluid test, results of which are usually available in 10-14 days. Once the test is run, the results can be considered better than 99% accurate which is comparable to the standard blood or oral fluid test.

If you test HIV negative, it means that you were negative 3 months before taking the test. This reflects the maximum amount of time the human body needs to produce enough antibodies (the body’s response to infection) to be detected by the test. This three-month time is referred to as the “window period”.

If you test HIV Preliminary Positive/Reactive using the rapid test, we will need to run an additional “confirmatory test”. This is because like all HIV tests, the result must be confirmed with a different type of test. This confirmatory test will require the collection of a second sample through an oral swab. The results of this test usually will be available in 10-14 days.

The need for confirmatory testing in the case of a Preliminary Positive/Reactive is just one thing you need to think about when considering a rapid test. Other things we suggest you consider before taking the test are:

What does your personal support network look like (do you have someone close in your life in whom you can confide in case of a Preliminary Positive)?

What will you do if the result is Preliminary Positive/Reactive? What will your day look like, who will you tell?

What will you do if you are HIV negative?

APPOINTMENTS FOR RAPID HIV SCREENINGS ARE STRONGLY SUGGESTED TO AVOID A LENGTHY WAIT ONCE YOU ARRIVE IN OUR OFFICE.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions, to schedule your HIV Test, or HIV/AIDS counseling appointment.
